Stara Zagora

The nearest Ski Resort to Voden, Stara Zagora is not one of the main Skiing Holiday destinations, as snow isn't guaranteed, but it's the place that Bulgarians go to, as equipment hire and passes are about 1/10th of the price at the main Ski Resorts of Bansko, Borovets, Pamporovo etc. I've only been there in Summer, and it appears to be a vibrant, busy City with a lot of modern shops, a large outdoor market, park areas and lots of cafe's to sit outside and watch the World go by.

Driving out of Stara Zagora in it's multi lane one way system is a nightmare! Get a good City map and navigator, or better still, a GPS. Without the GPS, we'd still be driving in circles now. With the GPS, the directions were spot on. We use a Garmin Nuvi250. The European map that comes with the system isn't detailed enough, so download the BG Topo Map from www.topomaps.info (it's free), open it with Garmin mapsource and upload to the GPS unit - easy. The BG topo map is very accurate, and shows pretty much every geological and man made feature and most roads (even minor tracks). By the way, the best Bulgarian road map we've found so far is the Sixt car hire one. There is a Sixt at Burgas airport where you can pick up a map. If you want to get a map before going over, the Sixt site is at www.e-sixt.co.uk - I'm sure they'll be able to help you out.

Only been to Stara Zagora once, and we took what looked like a direct route, but it turned out to be a twisting hill climb on slightly dodgy roads and took around 90 mins. On the way back we took the main dual carriage way which took us about 50 mins to get back to Yambol.
