| The
nearest main Seaside Town to Voden and a great center for
exploring the coast. Sozopol, Sunny beach and Nesebar are within 15 to 20
mins and it's just a 50 minute drive from Voden.
Burgas (Bourgas) is modern and vibrant, with pedestrianised streets
full of shops and restaurants where you can sit outside.
Everything is a little more expensive being on the coast, but
is still good value for money. When we stay in Bourgas (Burgas)
we stay at the Chiplakoff
hotel, which can be booked through Silky
Holidays. It's cheap, spotlessly clean, modern with nice
sized rooms, the food is great and the staff are friendly.
It's along a side street and is an easy 15 minute stroll to
the Town center.
You could stay at the Hotel Bulgaria if you like, which is
a massive building in the Town center and always seems to have
dodgy looking black 4x4's and Mercs with blacked out windows
parked outside...
Opposite the Hotel Bulgaria is a large modern shopping
arcade with mirrored facade, where you can blow your money on
a genuine Rolex or Luis Vitton handbag. I much prefer popping
to Nesebar and getting them for a tenner...
The rest of the main streets consist of small shops, cafe's
restaurants - and a Macdonalds, and is great to stroll around,
which seems to be the main occupation for most of the locals.

| Burgas
has a wonderful Town park, that stretches along one side of
the town. It has teams of gardeners and street cleaners going
around all the time and is always busy. It has a number of
bars, restaurants, street vendors and children's play areas
scattered through it.
Beyond the park is the Beach which is quite a narrow strip
but stretches for miles. Going to the beach seems to be a bit
of an afterthought in Burgas, as it never seems to be crowded
- perhaps we visit at the wrong (or right) times? Anyway, it's
a lovely beach, pretty clean, with a calm, beautifully blue
sea. Again, there are a number of bars and cafes all along the
beach and it makes for a pleasant visit.
Some of the beach area is currently undergoing some
regeneration work, not sure what it is, but it looks
impressive.
You can also pick up a copy of the monthly English language
paper the "Sunny Times". It's unique as being the
only free English language newspaper in the area.
Burgas is also a center for the Autumn bird migration,
which is not to be missed! Massive numbers of birds including
Storks, Vultures, Harriers, Buzzards, Eagles, other rare
European raptors, Warblers, Flycatchers and many more breeds
can all be seen as they head down the Black sea coast towards
their warm wintering grounds in the south.
All around the Burgas and Yambol districts are huge
expanses of untouched forests and plains (The plains of
Thrace) and protected marsh land. Black bears, wild boar, deer
and dozens of other animals and birds may be spotted in the
area...
